Men and women who have served in the military or in law enforcement have all taken a sworn oath to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. In one form or another, all veterans and former law enforcement officers have taken this type of oath and for most of them, that oath doesn’t end and never will, even after retirement from active duty or full-time law enforcement. In fact, even politicians at nearly all levels also take this oath even though the exact wording of the oath will differ slightly.
Does Military Oath Expire?
With the oath that all members of the military take the day they are sworn, typically in a MEPS (short for “Military Entrance Processing Station”), there is no expiration date. And many veterans take this oath as seriously as the day they enlisted (10, 20, 40, 50 or 75 years ago). I have met veterans throughout the country that are still committed and “serving” even though their days of active duty or reserves are long over.
