Jill Fredrick, the vice president of programming and retail marketing for Brookfield Properties, expressed excitement about the upcoming anniversary celebration at The Yards, describing it as a particularly special year. Reflecting on the evolution of the event, she reminisced about its humble beginnings when only a few restaurants operated at The Yards, motivating organizers to devise ways to attract visitors during the colder winter months. The idea of an ice-themed event emerged, aiming to draw people outdoors even in chilly weather.
Partnering once again with Special Olympics D.C., The Yards is set to host the Polar Bear Plunge, a signature event that doesn’t involve plunging into the frigid Anacostia River but rather into a pool strategically placed on the boardwalk. Participants engage in the symbolic act of braving cold water while raising funds for the Special Olympics.
Following the plunge, attendees can indulge in a unique activity: taking a shot of liquor off D.C.’s longest shot-ski at 3 p.m. This tradition, paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, is making a comeback. The shot-ski, adorned with shot glasses, offers a lighthearted and communal experience for those over 21.
The festivities continue with an array of winter-themed games and activities, catering to various interests. From the snowboard simulator, providing a simulated snowboarding experience, to ax throwing and penguin bowling, there’s something for everyone. As a nod to the upcoming Olympics, iceless curling adds to the excitement.
Amidst the physical activities, attendees can cozy up by the fire pits and enjoy delicious offerings from food pop-ups. From a hot chocolate bar with an assortment of toppings to a fondue station and special seasonal flavors of ice cream, there’s no shortage of delectable treats to savor.
Throughout the event, live music and a DJ set the mood, enhancing the lively atmosphere. Attendees are encouraged to embrace the Aprés Chic theme, dressing up in snow jackets, ski goggles, and beanies for Instagram-worthy moments and photo booth fun.
Tickets for the event are priced at $15, inclusive of a drink ticket and a $5 donation to the Special Olympics, ensuring a memorable experience for a worthy cause.
