DC man killed his wife because he didn't want to eat pancakes she made, DOJ says

The Department of Justice claims the “defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her.”

In an unfortunate incident, an 85-year-old man, Steven Schwartz, has been charged with killing his 81-year-old wife, Sharon Schwartz, in Washington, D.C., reportedly over a plate of pancakes. The incident unfolded on Sunday when DC Police responded to reports of a stabbing at the couple’s residence on the 1300 block of Corcoran Street in Northwest. Upon arrival, they discovered Sharon Schwartz with stab wounds and Steven Schwartz with self-inflicted injuries. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where Sharon Schwartz succumbed to her injuries.

Following a preliminary investigation, it was determined that Steven Schwartz had probable cause to kill his wife. Consequently, he was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. During a court appearance via video on Thursday, Steven Schwartz entered a not-guilty plea. However, the judge ordered him to be held without bond pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for January 2, 2024.

While the motive for the murder has not been officially disclosed by authorities, a press release from the Department of Justice D.C. office states that the “defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her in the back.” The tragic incident has raised questions about the circumstances leading to the violent act. Authorities encourage anyone with information to contact DC Police detectives at (202) 727-9099 or use the department’s tip line by texting 50411.
