DC Police to distribute second round of free tracking tags as carjackings, theft continues to surge

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is launching the second phase of a pilot program aimed at addressing the surge in carjackings and thefts in Washington, D.C. The program provides free digital tracking tags, such as Apple AirTags and Tile trackers, to residents. During distribution events on December 5 and 6, MPD officials will distribute these tracking devices to residents in Police Service Areas (PSA) 107 and 507.

The initial phase of the pilot program began in November, with MPD advising residents to place the trackers in their vehicles to facilitate recovery in case of theft. The goal is to combat crime by assisting in locating and recovering stolen vehicles and holding offenders accountable.

In addition to vehicles, officials now recommend placing the tracking tags in winter jackets, as thieves have been targeting individuals wearing expensive coats. During the distribution events, MPD’s Community Outreach Officers will install the trackers into vehicles and assist with setting up the tags on residents’ mobile devices. The events will take place at RFK Stadium Lot 3 on 1900 East Capitol Street, Northeast, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on both December 5 and 6, and the trackers will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
