The 2021 season hasn’t exactly been a banner year for Texas or first-year coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff. The Longhorns have lost four straight games, all of which they led at some point, and three of which they led by double digits. The team has been mired in several off the field incidents as well.
Following the Longhorns’ most recent loss — a 30-7 rout vs. Iowa State — one of Sarkisian’s assistants appeared to voice his displeasure with the team’s performance. In a video that circulated on Twitter on Tuesday, someone who appears to be Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis was seen tearing into his players on the team bus, namely for their lack of commitment to the team as well as their demeanor postgame following the loss.
“Some of you motherf—s need to get in the transfer portal. This s—t ain’t a game to me and if you think it’s a game, get the f—k off of this bus,” Davis said. “I got my ass kicked and you motherf—s wanna laugh? This s—t is real. You think it’s a goddamn joke? I’m tired of this s—t because this s—t is goddamn real. And we wanna laugh and joke? F—k that.”
Davis clearly made his position known, in no uncertain terms. Some criticized his choice of language once the video was leaked, saying it was overly harsh and counterproductive. Others felt his tenor was acceptable — and perhaps even needed and justified — to inject some life into a program that has been stuck in neutral for much of the year. Still more people criticized the player and their decision to publicize the video.
Davis is in his first year under Sarkisian at Texas, just the latest landing spot in college football and the NFL. He was at LSU from 2002-05 under Nick Saban and Les Miles before he followed the former to the Miami Dolphins in 2006. He followed Saban again to Alabama, coaching the defensive line from 2007-10 before taking his first gig at Texas from 2011-13 under College Football Hall of Famer Mack Brown. He then had a few stops back at Alabama and the NFL before landing back in Austin.
Now in his second stint with the Longhorns following two years in the NFL with the Lions, Davis is well aware of what Texas football can and should be in his eyes.
But he isn’t the first Longhorns assistant coach to make headlines in recent weeks. Special teams coordinator Jeff Banks was in the news last week after news broke that his significant other’s emotional support monkey allegedly bit a child at a Halloween party.
The Longhorns currently sit at 4-5 with games against Kansas, West Virginia and Kansas State all left on the schedule. They’ll need to win two of those three to become bowl eligible as Sarkisian’s record as a head coach now sits at 50-40 for his career.
