Stephen A. Smith says he 'hates' Jason Whitlock, calls him 'a devil'

I did not get the memo that Festivus had been moved from Dec. 23 to the entire month of January. Grievances have been aired and an expansion for that holiday is the only explanation I have for why so many celebrities are beginning the year by verbally going upside the heads of those whom they dislike.

Aaron Rodgers got the party started with a low blow to Jimmy Kimmel. That was the first grievance filed on the Pat McAfee Show. A day later, the eponymously named host went after a long-tenured ESPN executive by name. McAfee’s program has been on the network for all of four months and he is calling out suits.

Katt Williams joined the party a day after Rodgers’ gripes with a nearly three-hour tirade on the Club Shay Shay podcast. He brought with him a grill from a Korean Barbecue restaurant, put comedians who he has a problem with on it, and allowed the audience to watch them sizzle.

Then came Stephen A. Smith. He has recently been making thinly veiled references to Jason Whitlock as a “no good, fat bastard.” I assume he stopped short of saying his name because that’s what that man desires. The only device that Whitlock has in his utility belt is to generate attention by talking bad about people in sports media, and also Black people.

On Wednesday evening, Smith had had enough. He told ESPN and others that he was not only going to say the name Jason Whitlock, but that he was going to reign down on him with vulgar vengeance and furious anger. And, my word, he came down on him like an atmospheric river.

There are a handful of people in this world whom I deeply dislike. Witnessing how awful grownups are capable of behaving, after coming to an adult understanding, can drive a reasonable person to hate. However, I have never loathed every cell of another person’s being that way that Smith does Whitlock.

He couldn’t hold it in any longer after Whitlock intimated on his podcast that Smith’s memoir was fabricated. That pissed Smith off so much that after saying “I hate this bastard.,” His final words regarding Whitlock were, “You get within a mile of his presence, wrap your arms around yourself to protect your soul. He is Cain. He is a devil.”

Who said men aren’t emotional? At the start of 2024, dudes have the real housewives appearing stoic. How about Stephen A., Whitlock, Aaron Rodgers, McAfee and Katt go to dinner with each other every week and pair off in small cliques only to turn on each other later in the season? Imagine that season-finale reunion. The only words Andy Cohen would get in would be, “hello,” and “what is wrong with these men?”

If this is what the rest of the year is going to be like, I will have my cabernet and charcuterie board ready. This is better than T.V., because the timeline can explode at any moment with news of the gentlemen in sports media not playing nicely.

Wait, there’s a presidential election this year and Donald Trump is running. Never mind. Give me some scotch, a Black & Mild and a pizza. The men being nasty with each other is all fun and games until they’re fighting to see who has their hand on the button. Happy Festivus, everybody!
