The Mariners are downsizing, and that’s a bad sign for all of MLB

Maybe GM Jerry Dipoto is trying to make that 54 percent a real challenge.

The baseball offseason has yet to kick into high or even medium gear, puttering along, warming up the tires, making sure the lights work, etc. What action has gone on so far has mostly been the Seattle Mariners cutting salary. – Sam Fels Read More

The Winter Meetings don’t work that way, Shohei

If you exist on a plane outside the insular world of sports Twitter (sports X?), you might not be aware that the world currently hinges on MLB free agent Shohei Ohtani picking a new baseball team. Until said team is chosen, those of us left behind in the bubble can do nothing but hit “refresh” on the social media accounts of Ken Rosenthal, Jeff Passan, Susan Slusser, and their ilk until such time as Ohtani sees fit to release us from MLB purgatory. – Julie DiCaro Read More

Why is Juan Soto such a burden?

Juan Soto might be the best hitter of his generation. In the past 53 years, only six players have accumulated more fWAR than Soto has before hitting age 25. They are Mike Trout, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, Ken Griffey Jr, and Andruw Jones. All of them Hall of Famers except for Jones. And the other four are first-ballot. Even though Soto has another 10-15 years left in his career, he already walks with giants. – Sam Fels Read More

Do the Miami Marlins have Google?

Back in October, we learned that highly respected baseball mind and glass ceiling-smasher Kim Ng stepped down from her GM role because the Marlins, whom Ng had improved from a record of 57-105 to 84-78 and an NL Wild Card berth, insisted on hiring a president of baseball operations to be Ng’s boss. Sure, many MLB organizations are structured to have both a president of baseball ops and a GM, but to suddenly shift to such a hierarchy after the first female GM in MLB history takes your woeful team to the playoffs felt stupid at best, and really, really sexist at worst. – Julie DiCaro Read More

Go ahead Jerry Reinsdorf, make everyone’s day

As has often been stated on these pages, Jerry Reinsdorf hates Chicago White Sox fans. And White Sox fans hate him. That’s the only fundamental anyone has to understand to get what’s going on the Southside. Or in this case, Nashville (insert Steve Harvey voice, “Takin’ his punk ass to Nashville…”) – Sam Fels Read More

Could you imagine if Shohei Ohtani signed with the Blue Jays?

A new team has entered a bid in the Shohei Ohtani raffle — the Toronto Blue Jays.

After it looked like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox or New York Mets initially would be the favorites to sign the two-way superstar, it seems as though Ohtani has narrowed down his list of potential landing spots on the second day of free agency. Among those still in the running are the aforementioned Dodgers and Blue Jays, along with the San Francisco Giants. – Mackenzie Meaney Read More

The Orioles should be stocking up for a World Series run, but opt to torture their fanbase instead

Baltimore Oriole fans looking to cleanse their palates of a bitter end to the team’s 101-win season will have to seek out a charcuterie board because the franchise’s big splash at the Winter Meetings is . . . Craig Kimbrel? – Sean Beckwith Read More

Amidst slow winter meetings, two of baseball’s biggest rivals broke the ice by making a rare trade. The New York Yankees acquired Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo in exchange for Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert, and Nicholas Judice. – Cale Clinton Read More

There’s still questions surrounding Carlos Rodon, Anthony Rizzo, and Giancarlo Stanton among others

Yankees trade for outfielder — no, not that one

We all know the New York Yankees were in the market for a left fielder. But while linked to San Diego Padres slugger Juan Soto, the Bronx Bombers instead swung a trade with the rival Red Sox for Alex Verdugo — a right fielder. – Anthony Locicero Read More
