Next-gen Surface Pro and Laptop may bring ARM chips, a new design, and big focus on AI

Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to launch the next-generation Surface Pro and Surface Laptop in the first half of 2024, with an expected announcement in spring. The Surface Pro “10” and Surface Laptop “6” are anticipated to bring significant changes beyond just updated internal chips. For the first time, Microsoft is said to offer more Surface devices with ARM processors, with options for both Intel and Qualcomm configurations, namely the 14th Gen Intel “Meteor Lake” and Snapdragon X Series. These ARM variants are expected to be positioned as purpose-built devices for the next generation of Windows, codenamed “CADMUS PC,” aiming to compete with Apple Silicon-based devices in performance and battery life.

The Surface Pro “10” is expected to feature new chips and display updates, including improved HDR support with higher max brightness, a new anti-glare coating, and rounded corners. Microsoft is reportedly experimenting with lower-cost models that feature a lower display resolution compared to previous models. Other changes include NFC support for commercial users, a redesigned front-facing camera with a wider lens, new color options, and an updated Type Cover with a dedicated Copilot button.

The Surface Laptop “6” is anticipated to have thinner bezels, rounded corners, two display sizes, additional ports (at least two USB-C, one USB-A, and the Surface Connect), and a new haptic touchpad. The device is also expected to include a dedicated button for invoking Copilot. Microsoft is said to be focusing on the Surface Pro “10” and Surface Laptop “6” in 2024, with plans for a new Surface Laptop Go and a successor to the Surface Laptop Studio 2 expected in 2025. The company is also reportedly experimenting with expanding the Surface Pro lineup to include an 11-inch model and offering refreshed hardware for commercial customers in the old design.

However, there is no information on whether Microsoft plans to revisit bold form factors like the Surface Duo or Surface Neo. With the departure of Panos Panay, the former Surface boss, it appears that Microsoft is currently emphasizing low-risk, well-established devices within the Surface lineup.
