Mexico Prepares to Challenge Texas Law Allowing Arrests of Suspected Migrants

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Tuesday that his government is preparing to challenge a new Texas law allowing state law enforcement to arrest suspected migrants. The law, signed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, grants local officers powers traditionally delegated to the U.S. government. Migrants entering the U.S. illegally can already be charged under federal laws, but Abbott criticized what he perceives as President Joe Biden’s failure to enforce them.

Mexico’s president, a leftist, referred to the law as “inhumane” and stated that the foreign ministry is already working on the process to challenge it. He criticized Abbott’s measures, suggesting they are aimed at gaining popularity but will likely result in losing favor, especially given the significant Mexican and migrant population in Texas. The new law is part of Abbott’s broader crackdown on illegal immigration, known as Operation Lone Star, which involves deploying the National Guard and implementing various security measures along the border.
